Emma: I joined BLM as a paralegal in September 2008. From day one I picked up a caseload of EL/PL matters which I carried forward into the first seat of my training contract in 2010. As you would expect, I was involved in all aspects of case management, including drafting pleadings and witness statements, conducting interim applications, instructing experts and counsel and most importantly, advising clients on their risks exposure as regards liability and quantum.
My time in fraud involved working on the very busy 'fraud ring' team, which deals with large scale fraud operations; the so-called 'Crash for Cash' scams which regularly attract nationwide media coverage. I had the opportunity to assist experienced lawyers on numerous operations and to get involved in undertaking investigations to assist in proving fraud.
Since joining the professional indemnity team I have had the chance to get involved with a wide variety of claims against different professionals, varying in complexity and value. I have been able to assist on all aspects of the work carried out by the team, including advising on policy coverage, legal liability and quantum.
BLM encourages you to take responsibility at an early stage; the range of tasks ensures life at BLM is always interesting and, above all, enables me to continue to develop both professionally and personally. The training at BLM is geared towards ensuring that you 'hit the ground running' on qualification. As a trainee, I have also had ample opportunity to get involved in numerous CSR activities, including being a mentor to LPC students at the Birmingham College of Law.
