“A colleague described BLM’s approach, as
‘giving enough rope to skip but not enough
to hang yourself'.”
Read Law at Warwick University. Matthew joined BLM as a trainee in September 2001 and qualified into the personal injury department in 2003. He became an Associate in April 2007.
First impressions of BLM: The people were very friendly and the team was well set up to ensure that trainees were given high quality and varied work, as well as a reassuring level of supervision.
Best thing about BLM: I was made to feel like a valuable member of the team from the outset. I was given lots of opportunities to assist with larger, more complex cases from an early stage and was encouraged to investigate new client opportunities. A colleague described BLM’s approach, as ‘giving enough rope to skip but not enough to hang yourself’, which I always found pleasantly apt.
Worst thing about BLM: Whilst the salary is competitive within the insurance litigation market, it doesn’t compare favourably to other ‘city firms’. This is more than compensated for by the excellent work life balance, friendly atmosphere and high quality of work.
Best moment at BLM: Winning my first trial. Whilst most claims are settled before trial, there is a sense that a trial is the culmination of every decision you’ve made in the claim. The client was very pleased and my feeling of personal achievement was great.
What do you know now, that you wish you'd known then: I perhaps didn’t fully appreciate the importance of good organisation straight away. I now believe that if you are organised and know what and when things need to be done, the rest falls in to place. |
