Shaping the law

One of BLM’s core values is “developing the law”. We are committed to improving the legal process, and for example:
  • at professional and industry level many of our partners have active roles in, working groups and otherbodies that continue to shape our legal landscape, and
  • we are regularly involved in test case litigation on behalf of clients, for example Barker v Corus (2006) and Majrowski v Guys & St Thomas’ NHS Trust (2006).
We have a dedicated policy development function that exists to support our clients and our lawyers in their engagement with policymakers and opinion formers in Government, regulators and industry bodies. This gives us an important presence in the debates that affect our key clients. Alistair Kinley, formerly of the Association of British (ABI) leads the policy development function here at BLM. Alistair comments:

During the course of a training contract, there may an opportunity for secondment to the ABI. The project-based work undertaken during such a secondment allows our trainees to have a better and broader understanding of the insurance industry and the commercial challenges our insurer clients face.

“In our work, knowing what is up to date is a given.  Where we at BLM can really add value is in anticipating trends and in taking part in debates about upcoming legal reforms at the formative stages.”
