Public law

BLM acts for many public sector bodies in the following areas of public law:

  • Public inquiries: our experience in public inquiries dates back many years and includes the Zahid Mubarak, Morris and Bristol Royal Infirmary inquiries.
  • Judicial review: we are experienced in handling judicial reviews - both as applicants for review and for those defending such applications.
  • Local authorities: we defend claims of abuse, injury, failure to educate, negligence and discrimination and advise on liability, policy review, housing, ASBOs, injunctions, judicial review, data protection, FOI, electoral law, the Human Rights Act and planning.
  • Police authorities: BLM has acted for police forces for over 30 years covering all police law litigation - assault, breach of statutory duty, unlawful arrest and police discipline. We also advise on matters such as Proceeds of Crime applications, injunctions, football banning orders, closure orders, sex offender orders and ASBOs.
  • Educational institutions: Our education team works across the sector defending claims including allegations of discrimination, inadequate supervision and examination procedure irregularities.
  • Prisons & Immigration:  We act for private prisons, detention centres and young offender units dealing with judicial reviews, inquests and human rights issues. We defend claims of assault, unlawful detention and misfeasance made by prisoners, detainees and young offenders.
