Stress is currently the hot issue for employers and insurers. Arguably an occupational disease, stress is now widely regarded as one of the major health problems facing employers in the UK. Recent high-profile court cases and some large payouts have stimulated an increase in stress claims as employees and unions have become more confident of success.

The cost of stress to employers is staggering. As long ago as 1998, the CBI estimated the cost to UK industry at about £7 billion a year. Many employment claims for unfair dismissal include allegations of stress, reinforcing a general perception that work today is more stressful than ever.
