BLM objects to incinerator the size of the millennium stadium

25 Oct 2011

Berrymans Lace Mawer LLP (BLM) solicitor Joanne Holbrook has successfully advised confectionary manufacturer OP Chocolate in objecting to a planning proposal for a neighbouring £400m 'energy from waste' facility. The proposed facility would have been the size of the millennium stadium and the largest incinerator in the UK.

International power generation company Covanta Energy had planned to build the facility within 3km of the OP Chocolate factory but withdrew their application this week. BLM's environment team had made representations on behalf of the client to both the Infrastructure Planning Commission and the Environment Agency in respect of the planning and permitting applications for the facility.

This would have been a significant infrastructure project for Wales. Over 10,000 residents in neighbouring town Merthyr Tydfil also objected to the proposal along with the local Member of Parliament, the local Member of the Welsh Assembly and both affected Local Authorities.

Congratulations to Joanne on her part in a successful outcome, which also demonstrates the wide range of work offered by the firm's national environment team.

Coverage of the case can be seen on the BBC News website.
