Recent years have been difficult for public authorities. In October 2010 the coalition confirmed the sector’s worst fears when cuts totalling £81bn were announced. This, in turn, has set public authorities the seemingly impossible challenge of maintaining service delivery with vastly reduced budgets; the response will shape the public sector for years to come. Already the advent of mass outsourcing and shared services has begun.
At the same time, claims numbers are up, whether from opportunistic members of the public or disgruntled employees facing redundancy. This means public authorities need to avoid short term thinking and preserve a good risk management culture. Why save money in accounting years one and two if those savings are then spent on avoidable claims in accounting years three, four and five? In the meantime, of course, the business of dealing with current claims goes on.
Our sessions will equip delegates for the upcoming challenges. We will start by focusing on issues affecting today’s claims with in-depth talks on PL and EL followed by a session on ‘horizon planning’ for landlords in light of recent public disturbances. Delegates will also learn how to cope with an inquest and avoid damaging publicity.
We close with a session on costs, looking at practical pointers and further information about the costs’ implications of the Jackson reforms.
